I think Park is a writer still awaiting the attention he deserves. Celestis is his version of Fifth Head of Cerebus and The Starbridge Chronicles (of which I've only read Soldiers of Paradise so far) shows a clear New Sun influence. One later sf writer who shows the strong influence of Wolfe is Paul Park. The recent Penguin collection did include some of his poems although I didn't agree a hundred percent with S.T. Unfortunately his poetry and translations are really only available in very expensive editions (I read his Collected Poems in a university library). Vance and Wolfe take his highly baroque style and chisel it down significantly which of course makes sense for a novel in particular but one thing they both retain is that sense of the truly alien, the sensuality, the vivid visual sense and ironic sense of humour.ĬAS is also one of the few fantasy and sf writers who had real talent as a poet, his translations of French decadent poets are first rate.
